The Deshi series from Zheng Zhong forge offers a great semi-custom functional sword for the beginning to moderate student. The Deshi is a hand made T10 high carbon steel (tool steel) that is forged in a maru style. The blade is traditionally clay heat treated and quenched to produce a true hamon with HRC of 63 and signed nakago (tang). The cutting edge is tempered to produce a very strong but resilient blade while leaving the spine softer to absorb shock. The blade is machine polished that produces a beautiful finish with a clear hamon. The handle has real same' panels and is double pegged for security. The saya is made of hard wood and finished in a gloss black lacquer with a buffalo horn mouth (koiguchi). The fittings are made of  blackened iron with your choice of Japanese menuki, premium Japanese silk ito and sageo. You have the option of natural same or gloss black lacqured.
